The Octopus Wallet - An Exclusive with DS Leather

The Octopus Wallets is a modular pattern to make two main variations of a Japanese-style bifold wallet. One version includes coin and card pockets with a large cash compartment, while the other omits the coin pocket to focus on increased cards capacity. Though designed for advanced skill levels, it also serves as a great learning opportunity for those new to crafting such bifold wallet design. For an easier project, The Baby Octopus Wallet is a simpler version requiring intermediate skill level. It skips the cash compartment, allowing you to carry folded bills while retaining the coin pocket.

Detailed step-by-step assembly instructions with in-progress pictures will guide you through the build and will give you some ideas for additional products possible with the pattern – an Octopus cardholder, a mirrored Octopus and the funky Octopus Mantle.

Dimensions: 11/8cm (~4.3/3.2 inches)

Leather: 

 > 1-1.2mm thickness (2.5-3.0oz) for the interior parts

 > 1.4-1.6mm thickness (3.5-4oz) for the exterior.

The Octopus – cards, cash & coins

Capacity: up to 6 cards, coins and unfolded cash

Skill level: Advanced

Pattern specific tools/materials:

 > 3mm and 15mm hole punches

 > 1 snap button up to 12.5mm (1/2in) cap size

Basic Instructions

Print pattern at 100% scale and verify size using the Print Accuracy Test. Measure and cut on the outside edge of the lines. Make sure to review the Assembly Instructions PDF file in full before commencing with the build. The stitch holes are spaced at 4mm and 4mm away from the edges unless mentioned otherwise on the patterns.
